Chapter 14

Birch and Kendrick raced out of the townhouse to the address Finna provided. Silence descended. Lang and Reginald, although exhausted from their failed errand, sat silently in the parlor with drinks in hand.

Golding loomed at the front door where he would no doubt remain until everyone returned. Finna drank up the quiet, hoping to calm her nerves. Her small garden in the back of the townhouse was in full bloom, and if she propped open the window, the smell would set her nerves at ease, but they were battened down like a ship sailing into a storm. Twenty years of impulsive actions settled on her chest like rock. She had brought them all to this moment.

Turning from the view, she homed in on her son. He sat; legs sprawled out across the settee with a journal in hand. If she looked over his shoulder, she knew what he would be doing. His drawings were professional in quality. The one impulsive choice in her life she did not regret.

Finna made her way to the chair closest to Bryant and settled in. Sure enough, he created a scene with Lang and Reginald, capturing the essence of the current mood. He was almost an adult. Soon there would be no way to keep who she was from him, to shield him from the censure he would walk into. The fortune he would gain upon reaching his majority would go a long way in helping, though.

"Mother," he began, not looking up from his work. "Why is Mr. Birch and Lord Harwich here? And why is everyone so concerned about where Contrell is off to?"

Finna smiled a sad smile, because she had been expecting the questions to come. "Well, Contrell is off with a gentleman that both Mr. Birch and Harwich are hoping to protect."

"Is he bad?"

"No, in fact I think he quite likes Contrell, but he is very important to another country and it's fight for freedom."

Bryant looked up at that with a quizzical expression. "Master Fornier says that the average person does not want freedom from their rulers and that the king is there to protect them."

Finna clenched her jaw. She did not want a son who caused riots, but she wanted a man with his own mind, and didn't just spout rote philosophies. "And as an average person, what do you believe?"

He sat up then and looked at his mother with his head tipped like he had never considered that before. "I didn't know I could think another way. Master Fornier says—"

"Soon, my son, Master Fornier will be a memory and you will in the world making your way. Master Fornier has done an exceptional job at teaching you one way of looking at the world, but as America has shown us all, it certainly is not the only way to see it."

"I suppose you are correct. How would one go about learning other ways to look at the world?"

"Well, for one, doing as one's mother asks is a good start." He scoffed, but she persisted.
